The Okavango Delta braids across 15 000 km² of Botswana’s Kalahari Desert, providing an oasis to an abundance of wildlife: 200 000 large mammals, 400 bird species and 70 species of fish. Moremi Game Reserve, located in the central and eastern regions of the delta, is an area of startling contrasts – a waterless centre of savannah and dry woodland surrounded by lily-filled waterways, scattered flood plains, lagoons, riverine forest and palm fringed islands.
The exclusive and intimate Baines Camp is located on a huge private concession bordering Moremi. Built on raised platforms above the perennial Boro River and named after the 19th century explorer and painter Thomas Baines, this eco-friendly camp was constructed using only commercially grown wood and over 150 000 recycled aluminium cans. The elevated camp, surrounded by papyrus beds and sheltered by shady trees, offers expansive views over the river and lagoon teeming with wildlife. Baines’ Camp prides itself on its impeccable personalised service, luxurious accommodation, and attention to detail, assuring the most discerning guests of a perfect safari experience.
Accommodation
Baines’ Camp offers five luxurious suites, elevated on platforms overlooking the shimmering Boro River. Each suite features an opulent outdoor bathroom where guests can soak beneath a canopy of stars after an exciting day’s game-viewing, accompanied by the sounds of the grunting, wallowing hippos. Spacious bedrooms offer four-poster beds, swathed in mosquito netting, which can be wheeled out onto the private wooden deck for a night under the twinkling star-studded African sky.
Wildlife
The diversity of landscape and vegetation assures a corresponding variety of wildlife and birds. Large herds of impala, wildebeest, zebra and tsessebe are found in the area, and in the dry season, multitudes of elephant and buffalo flock to the region in search of grazing and water. The rare sitatunga and lechwe antelope live in the papyrus banks of the waterways, and lions, cheetahs and packs of Wild dogs hunt in the open grassland.
Jabu, Thembi and Morula are the three semi-habituated elephants that guests have the privilege of getting close enough to and can trace the texture of their skin, or marvel at their delicate eyelashes and huge padded feet.
The reserve is home to over 400 species of birds, including the African fish eagle, Bateleur, Crested and Wattled cranes, Black-tailed godwit, Sacred ibis, Green pigeon and the rare and elusive Pel’s fishing owl.
