Named after the Maasai people who inhabit the area, and the Mara River, which flows through this great reserve, the Masai Mara National Reserve is a land of breathtaking vistas over endless game-filled plains. Contiguous with Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park, it is known the world over for the awe-inspiring spectacle of the annual Great Migration over the golden savannahs. Whilst the migration is spectacular, the Masai Mara offers a constant and unparalleled flow of wildlife throughout the year.

The exclusive Governors’ Private Camp is the jewel in the Governors’ Camp crown, and offers guests a very special safari. The intimate camp, set along a meander in the Mara River, offers luxurious seclusion in harmonious surroundings where colourful birds flit through the forest, and hippos grunt lazily in the river as elephants escort their calves down for a swim.

Paraffin lanterns cast a warm glow, creating the romantic ambience of an old hunting camp. Accommodation

Governors’ Private Camp may booked exclusively by one family or group, with a minimum requirement of four guests for three nights required. Offering the exclusivity of a private safari camp, Governors’ Private Camp accommodates a maximum of sixteen guests in eight luxurious and spacious safari tents positioned on wooden platforms. The tents exude warmth and comfort, with polished wooden floors, hand-made wooden furniture and colourfully ethnic soft furnishings. Private en-suite bathrooms offer his and hers bucket showers, and the large secluded verandahs offer the perfect space to sip a sundowner while overlooking the river and the multitude of animals quenching their thirst.

Wildlife

Between July and October each year, 1.5 million wildebeest and zebra surge up from the Serengeti plains in search of sustaining seasonal grasses. The spectacle of the vast herds crossing rivers and sweeping across the golden savannah is an unrivalled safari experience, and predators lie in wait to snare an ungulate. At all times of the year, game viewing is spectacular. The forest around the camp is home to many beautiful birds including rare trogans and turacos, and nesting hornbills.

The open savannah and undulating hills of the Masai Mara are home to a large diversity of game, including cheetah, hyena, and the famous black-maned Mara lions, which prey on the herds of zebra, wildebeest, Thomson’s gazelle, buffalo, kongoni and topi that abound in the golden grasslands.

The bird list totals over 450 species, ranging from the large (Common Ostrich), to the small (Cardinal Quelea). Six of the seven species of Kenyan vulture (Egyptian, Hooded, Griffon, Nubian, White-backed and White-headed) can be seen in the reserve. The Mara is also home to three uncommon woodpeckers (Golden-tailed, Little Spotted and Fine-banded), and the rare and elusive African finfoot and Blue quail.

• There are twice daily scheduled 45 minute flights from Nairobi Wilson Airport to Musiara Airstrip in the Masai Mara conducted by a range of airlines including Governors Aviation.

• From Musiara to Governors Private Camp it is a 15 minute transfer by Landrover.

• Private charter flights from anywhere in Kenya can also land at the all-weather Musiara Airstrip.

• You can drive from Nairobi to Governors Private Camp. It is a 6 hour journey depending on the road conditions.
