Hwange National Park is the largest Park in Zimbabwe, occupying roughly 14 650 square kilometres. The Ivory Lodge is located in the northwest corner of the country, one hour south of the iconic Victoria Falls, on a private concession of 24 square kilometres. Over 100 species of mammals and more than 400 birds are found here, including the world famous Presidential elephants, which often wander down to Ivory Lodge’s watering hole to quench their thirst.

The stilted Ivory Lodge lies in the shade of massive teak trees, blending seamlessly into the ancient Sikumi Forest. The small intimate lodge is named for the glistening tusks of the lumbering pachyderms that frequent the area. Luxurious accommodation and personalised service assure guests of a relaxing getaway.

Accommodation

The intimate Ivory Lodge comprises of seven ‘tree houses’ and  two tented ‘Presidential Elephant Suites’, all elevated to command spectacular views over the very active waterhole. The simplistic, but comfortable tree houses are en-suite and have partially open sides. The Presidential Elephant Suites have private balconies and the en-suite bathroom includes a bath with a porthole window overlooking the bush.

Wildlife

The game viewing is superb at Hwange. The big five is often present and the surrounds are teeming with herds of sable, elephant, buffalo, giraffe, impala, zebra and wildebeest. Guests can sight lion, leopard and wild dog, and if lucky, may spot the rarely seen rhino.

Over 400 species of birds have been recorded in Hwange, which is probably best known for its huge population of raptors such as the martial eagle, Steppe buzzard, and Bateleur eagle. The largest bird found here is the ground dwelling Kori bustard. Specialities include crowned cranes, Bradfield’s hornbill, Burchell’s sandgrouse, the Bronze-winged courser, and the ever-present lilac-breasted roller. Migratory species such as southern carmine bee-eaters, black kites and broad-billed rollers greatly increase the bird list in the summer months.

Children:
Children under the age of two years will be accommodated free of charge when sharing a room with other paying guests
Children aged 12 years or older will be charged adult rates. Children 3-11 pay 50% of adult rate if sharing with an adult. If 2 children require their own room and are under 12, one pays full adult rate and one pays 50%

Ivory Lodge is founding members of the Conservation Wildlife Fund in Hwange. A compulsary fee of $10.00 per person per night has been implemented and this goes towards the Trusts efforts to protect the species and habitat in and around the Hwange region.
