Named after the Maasai people who inhabit the area, and the Mara River, which flows through this great reserve, the Masai Mara National Reserve is world renowned as the setting of Karen Blixen’s book, Out of Africa. It is a land of breathtaking vistas over endless game-filled plains.

The intimate and luxurious Little Governors’ Camp is approached by a boat ride across the Mara River, followed by an escorted walk through the riverine forest. Superbly located above a small swamp frequented by wildlife slaking their thirst, Little Governors’, the setting for the film Out of Africa, offers vistas of plains dotted with acacia trees fringed by the Siria Escarpment.

The camp is tucked into a corner of the verdant forest along a meander of the Mara River, making for an exquisite, romantic setting offering serenity and seclusion. Added to this, the impeccable service, sumptuously comfortable accommodation, and outstanding cuisine make for an idyllic African safari in a pristine wilderness.

Accommodation

Little Governors’ offers seventeen comfortable and spacious en-suite tents, curving in a wide arc around the marsh. Each secluded tent, furnished in earthy shades, blends seamlessly into the surroundings, and offers a polished timber deck and large veranda from which guests can watch the parade of wildlife at the watering hole.

Wildlife

Little Governors’ Camp is located on the Mara River, the location of the dramatic Great Migration between June and September each year. Crocodiles in the river lie in wait for the massive herd of wildebeest and zebra that cross the river en route to the rain and fresh grass in the Serengeti.

The open savannah and undulating hills of the Masai Mara are home to a large diversity of game, including cheetah, hyena, leopard and the famous black-maned Mara lions, which prey on the herds of zebra, wildebeest, Thomson’s gazelle, buffalo, kongoni and topi that abound in the golden grasslands.

A resident family of warthogs wanders freely through Little Governors’, and guests may need to make way for elephants that drift through the unfenced camp.

The bird list totals over 450 species, ranging from the large (Common Ostrich), to the small (Cardinal Quelea). Six of the seven species of Kenyan vulture (Egyptian, Hooded, Griffon, Nubian, White-backed and White-headed) can be seen in the reserve. The Mara is also home to three uncommon woodpeckers (Golden-tailed, Little Spotted and Fine-banded), and the rare and elusive African finfoot and Blue quail.

• Inoculation against Hepatitis A and typhoid is also recommended.

Directions

• BY AIR:

• 8.5 hour international flight to Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta Airport, then its 30 minute by road to Wilson Domestic Airport.

• Two scheduled 45 minute flights operate from Nairobi’s Wilson airport on a daily basis, to Musiara airstrip.

• Guests are met on arrival and transferred in a Landrover to the camp (duration approx. 15 minutes).
