A short drive from Johannesburg delivers you into the unparalleled Eden that is the Welgevonden Private Game Reserve: a 35,000 hectare haven of wilderness conservation that hosts the luxury Nungubane Game lodge. Situated in the heart of the Waterberg Mountains in the tranquil and temperate Limpopo Province, Welgevonden is a malaria-free sanctuary for South Africa’s most cherished wildlife and its most valued guests.
Nungubane is one of the reserve’s most spectacular and intimate five-star lodges, hosting guests in a limited number of spacious chalets and offering them privacy, exclusivity and exemplary service that rivals any world-class destination.
Accommodation
With romantic furnishings reminiscent of bygone colonial splendor, ten secluded chalets are tucked away in the quiet surrounds of Welgevonden to ensure visitors maximum privacy and tranquility. Bedrooms, luxuriously appointed with twin or king size beds, lead out onto individual decks, so guests can spot game at their leisure or greet the rising sun each morning from the privacy of their own chalet.
En-suite bathrooms with large tubs surrounded by windows are designed to let nature and light in, and the extra, outdoor showers are a wonderful way to cool down in warm weather. During winter, nothing is better than curling up in front of your room’s crackling fire with Africa’s glittering night skies passing overhead. All suites come standard with overhead fans and tea/coffee making facilities.
Wildlife
The sprawling Welgevonden Reserve is set alongside the Marakele National Park and supports a diverse array of indigenous fauna and flora. Aside from the Big Five, other mammals that call Welgevonden home are the rare brown hyena, aardwolf and aardvark. Shared with the over 5500 endemic plant species, the region is also the habitat of over 300 bird species and has been declared an International Biosphere Reserve.
Characterized by the envelopment of a diverse range of landscapes, from rocky ravines and densely wooded hills to sprawling savannah plains, Welgevonden has captured the rare and rugged beauty of the untouched Waterberg wilderness.
