Named after the Maasai people who inhabit the area, and the Mara River, which flows through this great reserve, the Masai Mara National Reserve is world renowned as the setting of Karen Blixen’s book, “Out of Africa”. It is a land of breathtaking vistas over endless game-filled plains, known the world over for the awe-inspiring spectacle of the annual Great Migration. Whilst the migration is spectacular, the Masai Mara offers a constant flow of wildlife throughout the year.

The award-winning Olonana is a boutique tented safari camp on a private stretch of the Mara River in the heart of Kenya’s Masai Mara. The eco-friendly camp has earned a gold award from Ecotourism Kenya for its innovative conservation projects.

Accommodation

Olonana features fourteen spacious tents overlooking the Mara River. The luxuriously appointed en-suite tents have two queen size four-poster beds, swathed in billows of mosquito netting, and secluded river view verandahs perfectly placed for sipping sundowners as the nearby hippos grunt, and a myriad of birds flit from branch to branch. The two romantic honeymoon suites feature additional outdoor showers for star canopied bathing.

Wildlife

The Masai Mara, with 1 510 square kilometres of open savannah, woodlands and tree lined rivers, supports a huge diversity of birds and mammals. Large herds of gazelle, wildebeest and zebra graze on the plains, and are hunted by black-maned Mara lions, cheetah and leopard. Great herds of elephant browse amongst the rich grasslands while hippo and crocodiles keep cool in the Mara River.
Each year, in the deep south of the Serengeti the wildebeest start their great trek in search for the sweet grass of the Masai Mara. This is known as the Great Migration, during which hundreds of thousands of wildebeest, zebra and other herbivores cross the Mara River, risking their lives to the jaws of enormous Nile crocodiles and other carnivores attracted by the easy pickings.
The bird list totals over 450 species, ranging from the large (Common Ostrich) to the small (Cardinal Quelea). Six of the seven species of Kenyan vulture (Egyptian, Hooded, Griffon, Nubian, White-backed and White-headed) can be seen in the reserve. The Mara is also home to three uncommon woodpeckers (Golden-tailed, Little Spotted and Fine-banded), and the rare and elusive African finfoot and Blue quail.

• Children of all ages are welcome at Sanctuary Olonana.
• Children 15 or younger are required to share with an adult.
• Children aged 2 and younger stay free of charge.
• Children aged 3 – 15 inclusive pay child reduction rate when sharing with 2 paying adults.
• In all other circumstances, children pay the applicable adult fare.
