Saadani National Park is one of the only remaining protected coastal areas in Africa. The park covers 1100 square kilometres and is the only wildlife sanctuary in Tanzania that borders the sea.
Saadani Safari Lodge is idyllically located on the southern boundary of Saadani National Park, where the Wami River enters the warm Indian Ocean. Here beach, bush and river combine to create a diversity of pristine ecosystems, offering guests the unique opportunity to bathe in the sea after spectacular wildlife viewing in the African bush.
The intimate and exclusive Saadani Safari Lodge nestles in a sheltered horseshoe bay, with golden beaches stretching out on either side, the azure ocean ahead, and ancient indigenous trees in savannah plains behind.
Accommodation
Saadani Lodge has six eco-friendly suites stretching along the sandy beach offering magnificent views of the ocean. The five elegant Maridadi Suites are constructed from grass collected in the local village and are en-suite with an additional outdoor shower. The beds are carved from chunky dhow wood, complemented by comfortable wooden framed couches in the lounge area and stunning teak floors. Each suite opens onto a raised timber deck, surrounded by indigenous trees and leading directly onto the golden beach.
The exclusive Siri Suite is ideal for honeymooners and romantic couples. The secluded suite offers total privacy, and is accessed by a private walkway over a dry riverbed. In addition to the features of the Maridadi Suites, the Siri boasts a private swimming pool, kitchen with personal chef, a bar, and personal butler. The deck offers the perfect venue for private romantic dinners or sipping sundowners overlooking the private strip of beach and shimmering ocean. An all-inclusive option is available.
Wildlife
The varied ecosystems, savannah, estuarine, and marine, mean a huge biodiversity of animal and bird life. The Saadani National Park features about 30 species of larger mammals as well as many reptiles and birds, whilst the Indian Ocean is home to hundreds of species of fish, dolphins and humpback whales. Wildlife includes large numbers of hippo, crocodile, giraffe, buffalo, warthog, zebra, gazelle, waterbuck, reedbuck, hartebeest, wildebeest, yellow baboons and vervet monkeys. Predators include lion, leopard, spotted hyena and black-backed jackal, and sightings of the rare colobus monkey and endangered Roosevelt’s sable frequently occur during game drives.
Birdlife includes the lilac-breasted roller, grey hornbill, fork-tailed drongo, and a variety of iridescent sunbirds. Flamingos, kingfishers, grey herons and yellow-billed storks are often seen in the shallow estuarine waters.
