Sarova Salt Lick Game Lodge is situated in the Taita Hills wildlife sanctuary, a private reserve of 28 000 acres bordering South Kenya’s Tsavo West National Park. The 96 oval shaped rooms, elevated on stilts and linked by suspended walkways, overlook the vast Tsavo plains and a waterhole that attracts an array of wildlife. At night, the floodlit waterholes ensure guests a nocturnal view of the procession of animals that come to quench their thirst. There is an underground tunnel and chamber allowing guests close and safe ground level views. The Game Lodge is renowned for its friendly welcoming hospitality, personalised attention, and high standards of service.
Accommodation
The accommodation at Sarova Salt Lick Lodge is unique. Each of the 96 oval rooms is perched high above the ground, assuring all guests spectacular views over the plains and waterhole. Rooms are on two levels, with options of double, twin or triple accommodation. The rooms are elegantly furnished and have well-appointed en-suite bathrooms.
Wildlife
The sanctuary is not fenced and wild animals roam freely around the lodge. More than 50 different kinds of mammals graze, browse, hunt and scavenge in the grasslands and bush country of the nearby Tsavo West National Park. Animals include leopard, cheetah, buffalo, rhino, elephant, giraffe, zebra, lion, crocodile, mongoose, hyrax, dik dik and porcupine. Among the more unusual of the animals is the gerenuk, a long necked antelope that browses on the higher, sweeter leaves of acacia trees.
The bird life is as varied as the landscape, and around 600 species have been recorded in the area. Tsavo is home to both species of Kenyan Ostrich and Hartlaub’s Bustardand and is a good place to spot some of the rarer migrant falcons, including Eleonora’s Falcon and the Sooty Falcon.
The Taita Hills are home to the Taita Thrush, an endangered species, and the Taita White-eye, both of which are found only here.
