The Shaba Game Reserve in Central Kenya is a rugged wilderness, with bubbling hot springs, rolling savannah, tracts of desert and the Ewaso Ngiro River, which supports a huge diversity of wildlife. The reserve was home to Joy and George Adamson, the renowned conservationists, and it’s here where “To walk with lions”, the film depicting the life of George Adamson was filmed, and where the monument to Joy stands.

The Sarova Shaba Game Lodge, on the banks of the life-giving Ewaso Nyiro River, is an elegant haven in the heart of this reserve. Spring water cascades throughout the lodge creating an oasis of lush tropical vegetation. The lodge tastefully combines local materials and architectural style using stone and timber and thatch.

Sarova Shaba offers guests sumptuous comfort, superb cuisine and impeccable service. In 1998, the lodge played host to the cast and crew of ‘Born Free’, the true-life story of George and Joy Adamson.

Accommodation

Sarova Shaba Game Lodge offers 80 luxurious en-suite chalets, four executive suites, and a presidential suite, all with splendid views of the Ewaso Nyiro River. All rooms offer private balconies and beds canopied by mosquito netting. The executive suites offer luxuriously furnished private lounge areas and are picturesquely set with river views on one side and views of manicured gardens and the forest on the other. The sumptuous presidential suite is a spacious stand-alone unit situated among natural springs and lily ponds and boasts a living and dining area as well as a private Jacuzzi.

Wildlife

Shaba Game Reserve offers a number of weird and wonderful species endemic to this area, such as the gerenuk – also known as the ‘giraffe necked antelope’ because of its stretched neck adapted for browsing high into the bushes. Other local inhabitants include Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffes, Besia oryx, and the tiny dik dik, devoted to its mate for its lifetime. Large crocodiles and hippos inhabit the river, and predators such as leopard, lion, cheetah and hyena are found here.

Over 350 species of birds are attracted to the gardens of the Sarova Shaba Lodge making it a great place for avid birders. The near-threatened Williams’s Lark is found in the reserve, which lies on the migration route for the globally threatened Lesser Kestrel, a few of whom pass through each year. Shaba is also home to regionally-threatened birds such as the African Darter, Great Egret, White-headed vulture, Martial eagle and Yellow-billed oxpecker.
