The spectacular Zambezi escarpment forms the backdrop to Sausage Tree Camp, which lies at the confluence of the picturesque Chifungulu Channel and the Zambezi River in the heart of the Lower Zambezi National Park. Accommodation

Spaced to ensure privacy, the eight sumptuous Bedouin-style white canvas tents nestle in the shade of mature sausage and mahogany trees. Furnished in luxurious fabrics and Zambian teak, the tents have secluded open-air bathrooms and four-poster beds ensconced by flowing mosquito nets. Five of these are Signature Tents, two are Honeymoon Suites, and one is the family Kigelia House. The guests of each tent are attended by a personal machinda (butler), ensuring that every need is met.

The spacious Signature Tents have white canvas roofs, solid reed walls and are open in the front to the private veranda, maximising the river views. Leading out from each bedroom is a private, enclosed, open-air en-suite bathroom.

Kigelia house comprises two spacious bedrooms, set under one large canvas ceiling. The private open-fronted lounge with bar and dining table lies between the rooms, and opens to a large deck with private plunge pool.

The lavish, romantic honeymoon suites offer a private dining and lounge area, with wide wooden shutters opening onto a private deck and plunge pool. The bathing facilities include a large stone bathtub, and duo indoor and outdoor showers.

Wildlife

Sausage Tree Camp is unfenced, and elephant, hippo and buffalo are seen in camp daily. Guests frequently spot lion, leopard, wild dogs, hyena, waterbuck, zebra, impala, bushbuck and kudu during their stay. A honey badger is seen in camp regularly in the early hours of the morning, and resident porcupines scurry through the undergrowth beneath the Mahogany trees in the late evenings.

The area offers magnificent bird watching, with around 500 species, varying from waders along the water’s edge, to wattle eyes in the escarpment woodlands. Interesting species include the large wading Saddle-billed stork; the tiny, bright Red-billed, firefinch; graceful bee-eaters; the African skimmer with its uniquely yellow tipped red bill; and the darkly shimmering Amethyst sunbird.
