Shamwari Game Reserve is a 25 000 hectare, malaria free, private game reserve situated in the Eastern Cape. Shamwari boasts five eco-systems, thus enabling the support of a wide diversity of plant, animal and bird life.

Shamwari Long Lee Manor, originally built in 1910, is Shamwari’s flagship lodge. This grand Edwardian manor has been beautifully restored and offers guests a distinctively colonial experience in a gracious country home enveloped by the African bush. Guests can feel the tranquillity as they gaze over the waterhole and the wide plains sweeping down to the Bushman’s River. The lodge exudes the elegance of a bygone era and offers guests refined comfort, attentive yet unobtrusive service, and splendid cuisine.

Wildlife

The variety of biomes in the reserve provide for great biodiversity. Guests frequently sight the Big Five during their stay, along with cheetah, caracal, wild dog and a variety of antelope. Evening game drives often reveal the more rarely seen nocturnal creatures, such as the hopping springhare, aardwolf, and brown hyena. Shamwari Game Reserve opened the Ian Player Rhino Awareness Centre in 2012 as a place where guests can learn about rhinos and the growing epidemic of rhino poaching in South Africa. The wildlife department is active in maintaining the delicate ecological balance and taking care of the health and safety of the animals.

Shamwari Game Reserve boasts over 250 bird species. Raptor species include Black Harriers, Pale Chanting Goshawks, Black-shouldered Kites, Booted Eagles and Secretary Birds. The Bushman’s river meanders through the reserve providing a great refuge for kingfishers, darters, the African Shelduck, finfoots and the iconic African Fish Eagle. Each spring (October), the palm trees in Palm Court are alive with nesting weaver birds
