Named after the life-giving river that flows its length, the Tarangire National Park is Tanzania’s fifth-largest park. Ancient baobabs stand sentinel above the open savannah and riverbeds, and the varied habitats are home to a large diversity of mammals and birds.

Swala is located in a remote corner of Tarangire National Park. The eco-friendly camp is secluded amongst spreading old acacias and looks out over the expansive flat savannah. The exclusive Swala is a picturesque safari hideaway offering guests faultless service, gourmet cuisine and the rare privilege of an authentic safari in a region totally devoid of tourist crowds.

Accommodation

The secluded Swala Camp has twelve luxurious canvas pavilions, all with en-suite facilities and an additional outdoor shower. The tents are spaced to ensure privacy, and offer a large sumptuous living area and king size beds. Full height canvas windows lead onto secluded timber decks with magnificent views over the main waterhole, which is frequented by leopards, lion, and resident bull elephants. The spacious tents feature locally crafted fixtures and fittings, creating an authentic safari ambience. A personal butler is on hand to shower guests with personal attention.

Wildlife

The unfenced Swala is frequently visited by the resident wildlife, including impala, waterbuck, lion and elephant. The resident leopard is a regular visitor at the camp’s waterhole.

Aside from the expansive savannah, Tarangire has lush green swamps where elephants stand shoulder deep in juicy grasses. The swamps draw herds of buffalo, wildebeest, and zebra, with predators usually in close attendance. There are 94 mammal species, concentrated around the perennial Tarangire River, including kudu, the fringe-eared oryx, and the peculiar long-necked gerenuk. Disused termite mounds attract dwarf mongoose, and pythons lounge in the branches of sausage trees.

Tarangire is an ornithologists’ paradise, boasting over of 500 species of birds, including the brightly coloured lilac-breasted roller, orange-bellied parrot, yellow-collared lovebird and malachite kingfisher. Also here is the world’s heaviest flying bird, the Kori bustard, and the world’s largest bird, the ostrich.

• Children aged 6 and over are welcome at Serengeti Migration Camp.

• There is a once a day scheduled light aircraft flight into Kuro from Arusha.

• The drive from Arusha to Swala Camp is 182 kilometres.

• The route taken along Tarangire National Park’s serviced roads allows for some incredible game viewing.
